“The conference brings together researchers from these communities, who normally attend their individual conferences, but not a conference with such a multi-disciplinary flavor,” CSL Professor and conference co-chair Tamer Başar said. “Over the years, this series has shown that there is a lot of benefit to attendees in terms of exposition to other neighboring fields of study, meeting people from other fields, and hearing the latest developments in a comfortable and conducive environment.”

Başar co-chaired the conference with CSL Professor Olgica Milenkovic and this year’s conference had over 450 attendees and 51 sessions where attendees heard 285 papers presented over the three days.

“Even though the conference started as a regional one, the word has gotten around over the years, and it now attracts global, international audience,” Başar said. “The fact that the review time is very short, enabling researchers to present results they have obtained beginning or mid summer in early fall, has made it a very attractive scientific meeting, with sustained high quality of presentations.”

Kannan Ramchandran of the University of California, Berkeley gave the Plenary Lecture on the topic of codes for the storage cloud. He highlighted the fundamental role of network codes in meeting the Big Data challenges of modern distributed storage systems that are built from unreliable components.

The conference is held annually at the Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello, Ill. and roughly 7,000 papers have been presented over the years.
